Counselling and Play therapy room in Kobe, Kansai, Japan

This page is permanently under construction. I list more resources and information as I have time to work on the site. I particularly aim to provide links to resources in the Kansai (Hyogo, Osaka, Kyoto, Shiga, Wakayama, Okayama, etc) area and other Japan-specific resources. For general information there are innumerable websites outside Japan which are beyond my scope to list.

I CANNOT RECOMMEND ANY SERVICES OR INFORMATION LISTED, PLEASE CHECK CAREFULLY AND USE YOUR OWN JUDGEMENT AT YOUR OWN RISK. The listing is by no means complete and may contain errors. I receive no income from providing this information, it is a voluntary service.

Please help by telling me about inaccuracies and suggesting new information e.g. services you have found helpful or those in your area - I am less familiar with areas outside Kobe but many clients come from Osaka, Kyoto and other parts of Hyogo. You are also welcome to contact me if you think I might be able to help you find something particular. Telephone 078-453-1030, Email englishcounselling@gmail.com

Other Counsellors and Psychotherapists

International Mental Health Professionals Japan (IMHPJ)
A self-governing association of international therapists in Japan. IMHPJ's website provides a member database of English and other language-speaking therapists which can be searched by area, etc. Qualifications of practicing members (known as Clinical and Associate Clinical members) are checked on joining, and a complaints procedure is in place as well as professional development training, etc. I recommend choosing therapists from within this organisation

When choosing a therapist I recommend you contact several therapists in the first instance before deciding which is the best fit for you as there are many types of therapy and therapist. Therapists should be willing to answer questions about their approach and continue to be open to any concerns you have as therapy continues. If any concerns you have about how the therapist is treating you are not resolved by discussing them, it may help to talk about them with a friend or another counsellor or counselling organisation to help you decide if it is appropriate. Although therapy can sometimes be disorientating you should not find therapy makes you feel bad about yourself. Therapists should be professionally qualified and up-to-date members of a professional association, although, beyond this, higher-level qualifications don't always mean higher-level therapy! Personally I would always choose a therapist who has regular supervision, although not all registering organisations require this for experienced therapists.

If you would like suggestions of which therapists might be best suited to your particular situation, you are welcome to contact me, although I can only offer personal suggestions based on my limited knowledge of other therapists.

It is also worth considering therapists based outside of Japan if you are happy to work via internet. Contact reputable counselling and psychotherapy associations in the relevant country, such as the UK's British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy.

Helplines don't provide counselling, but they do provide immediate support and the relief of speaking to someone.
